Tim goes to The University of Manchester and studies physics.
Here you can find some of the stuff I did for various university projects. Reports and code snippets. Stuff that's more interesting will get its own wiki page. Most projects were fairly simple and so are the results.
There is also a google calendar here with all important dates for a current(beginning of term Sep 2007) fourth year student. If you have a google account and want to contribute let me know and I will add you. If you are interested in what the particle physics group is up to have a look at the agenda.
Fourth Year
After a Summer2007 student ship at CERN I have now started my fourth and final year(September, 2007).
As my Masters project I will be working with the Manchester SuperNEMO group on building and understanding prototypes of the tracker for the SuperNemo R&D project.
Every fourth year student takes part in a course entitled ProjectSkills. We will be investigating the problems associated with a nation wide DNA database.
In semester one I will be taking the following three lecture courses:
Advanced Quantum mechanics -- homepage
Superfluids and superconductors -- homepage
Frontiers of particle physics -- homepage
Third Year
You might be interested in my LectureNotes for the first semester of third year. Together with my lab partner Tom I worked on AlphaParticleEnergyLoss for six weeks.
PC3762 contains my thoughts, ramblings, submissions and other useful stuff on the course Programming in C++.
At some point I thought of a neat way of explaining when to fire thrusters on a spacecraft that is rotating, more on Mechanics.
Second Year
The stuff in uni/pc2762 contains code and reports related to Computer Techniques in Physics. So far I have added some matlab code to do numerical integration(SHM, forced, damped, etc) and some C++ code that does some basic PID control. There is a zip file located here, with all sorts of useful stuff for this course. The homepage with assignments for PC2762 is here.
uni/pc2161 contains what I can find of my submissions for Introduction to programming in C.
Over the summer each physics student has to write a "Vacation essay", topics can be chosen from a list published at the end of the semester. Mine was on Gaseous particel detectors. Before I wrote this one I was thinking about asking permission to write one on neural networks, you can find the beginnings of my reading list for that here.

Teaching
Most teaching on computing that I have received is utterly useless. Hence I'm collecting ideas how to do it better. Trying to teach people C/C++ is going to confuse them and does not make them think "yeah computers are useful for me"
These are notes for a computing course at oxford, though unmaintained a good starting point. The Software Carpentry course could be an extension to this or even a starting point.
